THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
OF CIRCUIT BENDING
Any conversation about Circuit Bending has to start with Reed Ghazala. While others were experimenting with audio electronics in the 1960s, it was Ghazala who pioneered the movement in 1966 and officially gave it its name. He approached the audio circuit as an "immediate canvas" – a raw playground where anyone could create without needing a degree in electronic theory. Through decades of building countless instruments and sharing his knowledge in workshops, the scene rightfully crowned him the "Father of Circuit Bending."
The origin story is as DIY as it gets: A young Ghazala left a battery-powered amplifier circuit inside his desk drawer. The circuit shorted out against a piece of metal, emitting random, alien noises. In an era where synthesizers were unaffordable monoliths, this accident sparked a revelation. If a random short circuit could produce such sounds, what would happen if you forced it intentionally? Where others saw a broken toy, he saw an expanding universe of sonic potential.
Circuit Bending – or "Mind Bending," as Ghazala also calls it – shifts your entire perspective. It focuses heavily on chance and creativity. Traditional instruments are predictable; they force you down a pre-determined path to an expected destination. A circuit-bent device, however, is like a chaotic compass with a wildly spinning needle. It leads you into the unknown, forcing you to navigate imperfect circles and embrace sounds you've never heard before. In our modern society, we are taught to avoid errors at all costs. But Circuit Bending forces us to rethink our concept of mistakes. After all, a single step in a seemingly "wrong" direction sparked a global art movement.
The true beauty of this method is its accessibility: it is for everyone. You don’t need prior experience or deep technical knowledge to get started. It thrives on obsolete, battery-powered trash. You take gadgets engineered for one mundane purpose and rewrite their rules, either through learned knowledge or random exploration on the mainboard.
Many bent instruments begin to behave as if they have a will of their own. By forcing a new connection on a PCB, you reroute the flow of electrons – like carving a new, chaotic street through a rigid city grid – and the machine has to deal with this unintended logic. The entire system develops a profound new dynamic. Even the cheapest junkyard radio can mutate into a unique instrument. It’s chaotic, it’s raw, and it’s entirely your own creation.

THE 6 RULES OF CIRCUIT BENDING
1. STAY OFF THE GRID (BATTERY POWER ONLY) Never, ever bend anything that plugs into a wall outlet. I know what a heavy electric shock feels like, and believe me, you don't want to find out. It can and will kill you faster than you can blink. We strictly hack battery-powered devices. No exceptions.
2. RESPECT THE IRON Don't forget to turn off your soldering iron, and never leave it unattended. Always use a proper stand. A hot iron rolling off your desk will burn through your skin, your table, or the plastic housing of the very instrument you are trying to build.
3. BREATHE AIR, NOT FLUX Always solder in a well-ventilated space. And for the love of your own sanity: don't buy cheap solder. A ruined project often comes down to one single, crappy solder blob. Invest in good rosin-core or Stannol lead-free solder (1mm) with flux. High-quality solder saves you from endless frustration and bad connections.
4. DOCUMENT THE AUTOPSY Take your time. Rushing leads to fried chips. Before you do anything, take high-res pictures of the PCB from both sides. Old cables will inevitably break the second you flip the board. If you have photos, you can trace every wire back to its origin. Use a colored marker to highlight your bends directly on the board and on a printed photo.
5. CONTAIN THE CHAOS Start with cheap junk from the thrift store. Don't gut your family's expensive gear. And never put loose screws directly on your desk. Use a cigar box or a zip bag. Screws act like tiny goblins—they will immediately roll into the darkest, most unreachable corners of your room. Contain them before they escape.
6. PROBE SMART, NOT HARD Never use a screwdriver or a bare wire to hunt for connections. That’s how you create fatal short circuits and fry an instrument in a microsecond. Use a proper hacking probe (I will post a DIY guide for this later). If you probe a connection and see sparks, or hear a nasty electrical crackling from your speakers—back off immediately. That’s not a bent sound; that’s the sound of dying hardware.
